WikiLeaks: Heartland Uncovers More Liberal Media Bias

Over the past three decades, it has become clear the nation’s most powerful institutions, especially in the media and education, are committed to working against the freedom of the individual and working toward establishing an entirely new America, one that values the “collective” and a centralized government controlled by a relatively small ruling class.

For those of you who have been following politics (or even just the news) since President Barack Obama first announced his candidacy, none of this will come as a surprise. Bias in the media and in the education establishment is rampant and unapologetic. Gone are the days when educators and so-called “journalists” would even pretend to be unbiased.

Although pro-liberty, free-market folks have long been able to point to any number of blatantly obvious examples of liberal bias in U.S. institutions, smoking-gun evidence clearly showing deliberate collusion has been relatively hard to come by–until now, that is. Thanks to thousands of e-mails recently released to the public by WikiLeaks, whose motives still remain somewhat of a mystery, Americans have access to powerful evidence proving once and for all what many pro-liberty constitutionalists have been saying for decades: The media and education elites desperately want to move the country toward socialism and they are working closely with politicians to shape a cohesive, unified, biased message to accomplish their goal.

The Heartland Institute is passionately committed to safeguarding our precious liberties and working toward making our children’s lives freer and objectively better than our own. This can only be accomplished, however, if people understand the threats to liberty that currently exist and that many in the media and in education are working relentlessly to impose their leftist goals for the future on an unaware populace.

With that in mind, I spent time, like many journalists, looking through WikiLeaks’ database of e-mails belonging to Clinton campaign chief John Podesta and discovered another incredible example of media bias, this time involving CNBC host (and GOP debate moderator) Rebecca Quick.

I published those findings on the front page of, where the article was shared thousands of times and received over 1,100 comments. The findings were covered by numerous websites and media outlets, notably Newsbusters and Politico (although Politico didn’t mention Heartland as the source).

Below are some of the most important parts of the Breitbart story, which you can read in full by clicking on this link.

Quick’s pledge [to protect the newly appointed Sylvia Burwell as head of the Department of Health and Human Services] came in response to an e-mail that appears to have been sent by Erskine Bowles, the former president of the University of North Carolina and the former chairperson of President Barack Obama’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.

In the April 11, 2014, e-mail, Bowles wrote to Quick to praise Burwell in the wake of the negative news coverage surrounding the appointment. “I listen to some of the talk today about Sylvia’s move to HHS,” wrote Bowles. “As you may recall, I picked Sylvia and John Podesta to be my two Deputy Chiefs of Staff. I picked Sylvia not only because she is brilliant (Rhodes), really Becky Quick like nice, informed and smart, but most importantly to me she knows how to run a large organization and run it effectively. … Regardless of your politics, any American should be glad that the President picked someone so competent to head such a critically important agency.”

Less than three minutes later, Quick promised to “defend” Burwell. “Thanks so much for the note—anyone with your recommendation is good by me,” wrote Quick. “Wish I’d seen this earlier while we were still blabbering! I’m out the first two days of next week but will make sure to defend her when things get further along in the nomination process.”

Bowles later forwarded the e-mails to Podesta, who thanked him, writing, “This will help a lot and I think at the end of the day most of these Senators will come through. … At any rate, thanks for coming thru as you always do. Love to Crandall and hope you’ll come to the Casa Podesta upcoming dinner to celebrate Sylvia’s swearing in.”

Those who believe in individual liberty must understand what they are up against if they are ever going to achieve success, and it starts with knowing the U.S. media and education elites will stop at nothing to manipulate and control what the public knows in order to accomplish their ultimate goal: enhancing the power of the ruling class.
